Hmmmm...let me guess. Could "watchout" possibly be looking at a multigame suspenshun for somethin a "poor referee" called last week?

From playing in D1 at Hershey this winter, I can tell you that the BAS ref's are FAR better... I'm sure we all can (word deleted by admin) about something... try another league and see just how bad you have it...

I feel refereeing as a whole is very poor in this province and as watch out has indicated, many I feel don't actually have the passion to ref but not necessarily there for their extra $$.
The ref we had for the game against Argentina should never have been there!! I watched him do a ladies game the night before and it was atrocious how he let the ladies game get to a level it just did not need to be in.
I think the biggest issue with referees are their inability to use 'man management' tactics on the pitch. We can't complain too much as referees are at a minimum these days, but come on, they have to do better than they are. We pay a lot of money to play in these Ontario leagues, (BAS, Hershey, OSL, Peel Halton) and the referees must step up with their refereeing methods.

Interesting comments. I've said it before and I'll likely be saying it til the day I die, "All leagues in the world from the lowest to the highest have players and teams that complain about officiating." I think Italy still officially considers that the World Cup in Japan/Korea to be "null and void" due to poor officiating.
I can say that in my experience the best referees that I've seen have a few common elements:
1) Ya...that "man management" thing that mb7 refers to. It's probably genetic and can't be taught because you either have it or you don't. We've all seen refs try to "card" teams into submission. Works in the EPL, right? Not so in a men's rec league.
2) They've played the game at a high(er) level. The hockey ref that figures he needs some extra coin in the summer and decides to read a book, take a course, and become a soccer ref likely has the decked stacked against his success.
3) "Look the part". You show up 5 minutes late with 1 sock around your ankle and a spaghetti sauce stain on your yellow shirt, you're gonna get snickers before the match even starts. Respect? Forget it. It was gone before the match even started.
4) Genuine interest in the match/league that they are officiating in. They know before the match starts that it's 1st place vs. 3rd place and may be a "goodie" as opposed to the guy who can't remember, nor care what the score was in the match he just officiated that ended 5 minutes ago.
I have no scientific evidence to back my points above, just good old-fashioned observation by someone who has probably watched more adult rec soccer matches than anyone else reading this post.

I must agree that the reffing is not the best. But the refs also have to be treated with some resepect. When a ref is being yelled at and questioned for every call from the beginning of a game there is something wrong. I have no qualms about questioning calls (talking rationally and not offensively with the referee) but when the calls that are in question can not even be seen clearly from the person yelling and screaming at the ref there is total lack of respect on the players part. I know that refs make bad calls....they make them for both teams....but yelling and screaming at them does not change their mind or their call it just tends to escalate bad feelings between the referee and the other team. I find that when you talk calmly to a ref to question or explain a call they are more open and most often will explain the call that was made...you may not like the call but at least you have an explanation and the referee is not getting aggitated because you were yelling and screaming in his face. Last but not least....if we don't have the referees....there is no GAME!!!!!

Ya, a common complaint is, "All I did was asked the ref what the call/whistle/card was for".
1) Refs are not required to stop and explain calls to ANYONE including Captain or coach. See myths:

Think about how drawn out and boring a match would become if players were given this right to question calls during play and expect answers. It would happen 15 - 20 times/game. Just think about that.
2) Often the ref's "take" on the complaint above is, "The player questioned my call by asking me, 'What game am I watching?' and told me to 'Shove the whistle up my a$$!!!' "

Long and short of it guys. NO MATTER HOW BAD A CALL IS THE REF WILL NEVER !!!! NEVER!!!! CHANGE THE CALL.
Quit yelling
Quit complaining
deal with it or go play bingo
If a ref blows a call, will you care a week later? Most likely not. Soccer, like life, if thats the case (as with anything else) its not really worth getting worked up over.
Deal with the challenge on the field... move on
